Dr. Pickens Museum of Turquoise Jewelry & Art — Ponca City, Oklahoma
The Dr. Pickens Museum of Turquoise Jewelry & Art is designed for the private turquoise jewelry, art and sculpture collection of the Pickens family. The museum blends into the open Oklahoma prairie on the 160-acre site located just outside the Ponca City limits.
The long-grass landscape anchors the metal panel and glass-window building, enclosed with a laminated wood and heavy timber roof form. The wood brings warmth to the interior and backdrops the largest collection of Native American turquoise jewelry in North America. From the reception through the three galleries the relationship with the prairie is distinctly reinforced by the section, orientation of light and scale of display. It is paramount the craft of architecture is noticeably apparent in the design, through the exposed structural assembly celebrated on the outside of the metal mass museum building.
The museum aims to attract new commerce and integrate with an existing circuit of attractions in northern Oklahoma to revitalize Ponca City.
